6 DAY DEVOTIONAL - Faith or Familiar? How to Make the Right Choice

Day 1: When Familiar Isn’t Safe

Scripture: Genesis 13:10-11 (NLT)
"Lot took a long look at the fertile plains... The whole area was well watered... Lot chose for himself the whole Jordan Valley..."

Devotional Thought

Lot made his decision based on what looked good, not on what God said. It felt right. It looked safe. It was familiar in its comfort. But his choice led him straight toward danger.

We’ve all faced moments like that—where we choose the job that pays more but steals our peace, the relationship that feels good but weakens our values, or the habits that feel comfortable but keep us spiritually stuck. The familiar path often requires no faith—but it rarely leads to growth.

God is calling you to a deeper life, one that doesn’t just seek comfort but chooses obedience. Like Abram, you may not know where your faith will lead—but you can know Who is leading you.

Reflection Questions

  1. Where in your life are you choosing what’s familiar over what’s faithful?

  2. How do you typically make decisions—by sight or by surrender?

Prayer Prompt

Lord, show me the places where I’ve settled for the familiar instead of following You in faith. Give me courage to choose obedience over comfort.

Action Step

Write down one area where you’ve been playing it safe spiritually. Pray over it and ask God to reveal what a faith-filled step might look like in that area.

Day 2: The Cost of the Easy Way

Scripture: Genesis 14:12 (NLT)
"They also captured Lot—Abram’s nephew who lived in Sodom—and carried off everything he owned."

Devotional Thought

Lot’s choice seemed harmless—until he found himself captured in a war he didn’t start. Choosing the familiar path may feel easier at first, but it can come with unintended consequences. The people we surround ourselves with, the places we position ourselves, and the principles we compromise have real effects.

Abram had to rescue Lot, not because Lot was a victim of injustice, but because Lot was a victim of his own decision. The same thing happens when we don’t consult God before choosing. Biblical faith is not just about believing in God—it’s about trusting Him enough to obey, especially when the road is harder.

Reflection Questions

  1. Have you ever experienced consequences from choosing what seemed easier?

  2. What does this story teach you about God’s mercy—even when we choose wrongly?

Prayer Prompt

Father, thank You for rescuing me even when I’ve made poor choices. Help me not to lean on my own understanding but to trust You fully.

Action Step

Take 10 minutes to journal past decisions that brought you regret. Ask God to redeem your past and guide your future decisions.

Day 3: Faith Begins in the Heart

Scripture: Hebrews 11:8 (NLT)
"It was by faith that Abraham obeyed when God called him to leave home and go to another land... He went without knowing where he was going."

Devotional Thought

Abram’s faith wasn’t about having a full plan—it was about having a willing heart. The hardest part of faith is not taking the step—it’s believing before the step. God rarely shows us the full picture up front. Instead, He invites us to trust His heart when we can’t trace His hand.

Faith starts in the heart: in the quiet moments of surrender, the whispered “yes” to God, and the trust that He knows better than we do. Lot saw the land, but Abram saw the Lord. One chose with his eyes. The other chose with his faith.

Reflection Questions

  1. What area of your heart is God asking for deeper trust?

  2. Are there fears that are keeping you from obeying God?

Prayer Prompt

God, increase my faith. Help me surrender what I don’t understand and follow where You lead.

Action Step

Say a “yes” to God today. Even if you don’t know all the details, speak it in prayer and write it down.

Day 4: When Obedience Doesn’t Make Sense

Scripture: Genesis 13:14-17 (NLT)
"After Lot had gone, the Lord said to Abram, 'Look as far as you can see in every direction... I am giving all this land... to you and your descendants.'"

Devotional Thought

Abram gave Lot the better-looking land and stayed behind in what seemed like less. But after Lot left, God spoke. Sometimes God waits for our obedience before He reveals the blessing.

Faith doesn’t always feel logical. It often requires us to let go of what we want for what God wants. But when we obey, we make room for God to show us what He had planned all along.

Maybe you’re in a season where obedience feels costly. Stay the course. The God who sees your surrender is the same God who honors your faith.

Reflection Questions

  1. What blessing might be waiting on the other side of your obedience?

  2. How can you trust God more in your current situation?

Prayer Prompt

Lord, even when it doesn’t make sense, I choose to obey You. Help me walk by faith, not by sight.

Action Step

Make one intentional choice today to obey God in a hard area—whether in your attitude, giving, time, or relationships.

Day 5: Faith That Rescues Others

Scripture: Genesis 14:14-16 (NLT)
"When Abram heard that his nephew Lot had been captured, he mobilized... and pursued the army... Abram recovered all the goods and brought back Lot..."

Devotional Thought

Faith doesn’t just change your life—it positions you to impact others. Abram didn’t hold a grudge against Lot. He didn’t say, “He made his bed—let him lie in it.” Abram moved in love, grace, and strength to rescue someone who made a foolish choice.

Real faith is never selfish. It makes room to restore others. It fights for the broken. It lifts up the fallen. We are called to be people whose faith not only blesses us but rescues others.

Think of someone in your life who’s drifted or made a poor choice. Could God be calling you to help them back to freedom?

Reflection Questions

  1. Who in your life needs grace and rescue—not judgment?

  2. How can your faith make a difference in someone else’s story?

Prayer Prompt

God, give me a heart like Abram’s—to love and rescue, not judge and ignore. Use me to be a light to someone else.

Action Step

Reach out to someone this week who’s struggling. Call, text, or pray with them. Be the grace they may not know they need.

Day 6: Step Out of Familiar, Step Into Faith

Scripture: 2 Corinthians 5:7 (NLT)
"For we live by believing and not by seeing."

Devotional Thought

Every day you’re faced with a choice: stay where it’s safe, or step where it’s sacred. Faith invites you to leave the shore and walk on the water—to stop clinging to comfort and start trusting the call.

Abram shows us that growth doesn’t come from what’s familiar. It comes from following God into the unknown. You may not have all the answers, but you have access to the One who does.

Today is a faith moment. It’s a chance to trust, to risk, to obey. Your future in Christ isn’t behind you—it’s ahead of you. All it takes is a step.

Reflection Questions

  1. What step of faith is God asking you to take right now?

  2. What’s holding you back from taking it?

Prayer Prompt

Jesus, help me stop settling. Strengthen me to step out of what’s familiar and into Your purpose for my life.

Action Step

Write down your “next step” of faith. It might be joining a group, serving, forgiving, or starting fresh. Take one action toward it today.
