Who Is Your One? 6-Day Devotional

A week of devotions following Sunday's message on John 1:35-42. Big idea: Bring your one to Jesus.

How to Use This Week

Take 10 minutes each morning, Monday through Saturday, before you pick up your phone. Keep your "My One" card close by.

Each day follows the same four steps:

Step What you do

Read The Scripture for the day, slowly, out loud if you can

Reflect The short reading and one question to sit with

Pray The prayer, then your one's name

Do One small step before the day is over

Every day, end with this prayer for your one:

"Lord, I'm bringing [name] to You. Open a door, and give me the sentence."

Next Sunday, November 8, we continue with "Come and See."

Friends and Family Day is Sunday, December 6.

Day 1 (Monday, Nov 2): Somebody Pointed You

Read: John 1:35-37

"The following day John was again standing with two of his disciples. As Jesus walked by, John looked at him and declared, 'Look! There is the Lamb of God!' When John's two disciples heard this, they followed Jesus."

Reflect

Before Andrew ever brought anybody to Jesus, somebody pointed him. John the Baptist could have kept his followers for himself. Instead, he pointed away from himself and said, "Look!"

You didn't find Jesus on your own either. Somebody pointed you. Maybe it was a grandmother who prayed over you by name. Maybe a friend who kept asking you to come. Maybe a stranger who said one sentence at the right time.

The seed in your life was planted by someone else. That is how the gospel has always moved: one person pointing another.

Sit with this: Who pointed you to Jesus? What did they do that made a difference?

Pray

"Father, thank You for the people who pointed me to You. Some of them never saw what You did with what they planted. Let me be that kind of person for somebody else."

Then pray for your one by name.

Do

If the person who pointed you is still living, send them a text or call today: "Thank you for bringing me to Jesus." If they are with the Lord, thank God for them out loud.

Day 2 (Tuesday, Nov 3): Come and See

Read: John 1:38-39

"Jesus looked around and saw them following. 'What do you want?' he asked them. They replied, 'Rabbi' (which means 'Teacher'), 'where are you staying?' 'Come and see,' he said. It was about four o'clock in the afternoon when they went with him to the place where he was staying, and they remained with him the rest of the day."

Reflect

Jesus' first words in John's Gospel are a question: "What do you want?" He doesn't start with a lecture. He starts with an invitation: "Come and see."

Andrew took Him up on it. He spent the rest of the day with Jesus. Only after that did he go get his brother.

You can't bring anybody to Someone you haven't spent time with. If your own time with Jesus has been rushed or empty lately, today is not about your one. Today is about you. Come and see again.

Sit with this: If Jesus asked you today, "What do you want?" what would you honestly say?

Pray

"Jesus, I don't just want to know about You. I want to be with You. Slow me down today. Let me remain with You long enough to have something to bring."

Then pray for your one by name.

Do

Set aside 15 minutes today with no phone, no music, no agenda. Read John 1:35-42 again and just stay with Jesus.

Day 3 (Wednesday, Nov 4): He Found His Brother First

Read: John 1:40-41

"Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, was one of these men who heard what John said and then followed Jesus. Andrew went to find his brother, Simon, and told him, 'We have found the Messiah' (which means 'Christ')."

Reflect

The first thing Andrew did after meeting Jesus was go find his brother. Not a crowd. Not a stranger. The person closest to him.

Family is often the hardest audience. They know your past. They remember who you used to be. But that is exactly why a changed life speaks loudest at home. Your brother, your cousin, your son, your coworker you see every day: they have watched you. They have seen something.

Your one is probably already in your phone. They might be sitting across from you at Thanksgiving in three weeks.

Sit with this: Look at the name on your card. Why did God put that person on your heart? What is one thing you know they are carrying right now?

Pray

"Lord, I don't want to be the one who tells strangers about You and stays quiet at home. Give me courage with the people closest to me. Let my life speak before my mouth does."

Then pray for your one by name.

Do

Reach out to your one today with no agenda. A call, a text, a plate of food. Not an invitation yet. Just let them know you're thinking about them.

Day 4 (Thursday, Nov 5): One Sentence

Read: John 1:41 and John 9:25

"Andrew went to find his brother, Simon, and told him, 'We have found the Messiah' (which means 'Christ')." (John 1:41)

"'I don't know whether he is a sinner,' the man replied. 'But I know this: I was blind, and now I can see!'" (John 9:25)

Reflect

Andrew didn't have a sermon. He had a sentence. He didn't explain the Old Testament or answer every question his brother might ask. He told Simon what he had found.

Eight chapters later, a man Jesus healed is grilled by religious leaders. He can't answer their theology questions. So he says the one thing he knows for sure: "I was blind, and now I can see!"

You don't need a seminary degree to talk about Jesus. You need one true sentence about what He has done in your life.

Sit with this: If you had ten seconds to tell your one what Jesus has done for you, what would you say?

Pray

"Jesus, take away my fear of not having the right words. Give me one honest sentence, and give me the courage to say it when the door opens."

Then pray for your one by name.

Do

Write your sentence on the back of your "My One" card. Keep it simple: "I used to ___, but Jesus ___." Read it out loud until it feels like yours.

Day 5 (Friday, Nov 6): Jesus Does the Changing

Read: John 1:42

"Then Andrew brought Simon to meet Jesus. Looking intently at Simon, Jesus said, 'Your name is Simon, son of John, but you will be called Cephas' (which means 'Peter')."

Reflect

Andrew's whole part in this verse is one word: brought. Then Jesus takes over. He looks intently at Simon and speaks over who he will become. Cephas and Peter both mean rock.

Notice the words "will be called." Simon was not a rock that day. Three years later he would deny Jesus three times. The change took time, failure, and grace. But the name Jesus spoke came true.

Maybe you've been carrying your one like it's your job to fix them. It isn't. Andrew's job was the bringing. The changing was Jesus' job. You can set that weight down today.

Sit with this: What have you been trying to fix in your one that only Jesus can change?

Pray

"Jesus, You see my one more clearly than I do. You already know who they can become. I release the outcome to You. I'll do the bringing. You do the changing."

Then pray for your one by name.

Do

Write one word on your card next to your one's name: what you believe Jesus could make them. Then leave it with Him.

Day 6 (Saturday, Nov 7): Keep Planting

Read: 1 Corinthians 3:6 and Galatians 6:9

"I planted the seed in your hearts, and Apollos watered it, but it was God who made it grow." (1 Corinthians 3:6)

"So let's not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don't give up." (Galatians 6:9)

Reflect

John pointed Andrew. Andrew brought Peter. Years later, Peter preached on the Day of Pentecost, and about three thousand people believed (Acts 2:41). Andrew wasn't in the pulpit that day. But none of it happens without Andrew going to get his brother.

You may not see your one change on Friends and Family Day. That's all right. Somebody may have planted a seed in them years ago. You might be the one who waters it. God might let you see the harvest, or give it to somebody else. Either way, He makes it grow.

That's what being consistent and persistent looks like. Not one big push. A faithful hand that keeps planting.

Sit with this: Where have you gotten tired of doing good? What would it look like to keep going?

Pray

"Lord, I want to be faithful, not just fast. Help me keep planting and keep praying, even when I can't see anything growing. The harvest is Yours."

Then pray for your one by name.

Do

Look back over your card and the week. Then come to church tomorrow ready for "Come and See." We'll talk about bringing your one through the door.
