WHEN JESUS MEETS RESISTANCE – 6-DAY DEVOTIONAL

Day 1 – When Jesus Confronts the Heart

Scripture

Gospel of John
“So the Jews gathered around him and said to him, ‘How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Christ, tell us plainly.’ Jesus answered them, ‘I told you, and you do not believe.’”

Devotional Thought

In life, there are moments when we come face to face with truth. Sometimes that truth comforts us. Other times it challenges us. In John 10, Jesus stands in the temple surrounded by people demanding answers. They ask Him to tell them plainly if He is the Messiah. But Jesus’ response is striking: “I told you, and you do not believe.”

The issue was not clarity—it was willingness to believe.

This moment reveals something important about the human heart. Often we think our struggles with faith are caused by a lack of evidence or understanding. We assume that if God would just give us more signs, more proof, or more certainty, belief would be easy. But the people in this passage had already seen Jesus teach, heal, and perform miracles. The light had already been shining.

Yet they still resisted.

Sometimes resistance to Jesus doesn’t come from confusion. It comes from discomfort. The truth of Christ calls us to surrender control, acknowledge our need, and trust Him with our lives. That can be difficult for hearts accustomed to self-direction.

The good news is that Jesus does not withdraw when we struggle with faith. Instead, He continues to reveal Himself and invite us to follow Him. His words and works still testify to who He is today.

The question is not simply whether Jesus has revealed Himself clearly. The deeper question is whether we are willing to receive what He has revealed.

Every encounter with Jesus presents a choice. We can resist the light, or we can step into it.

Reflection Questions

  • When have you struggled to believe or trust what God was showing you?

  • Is there an area of your life where you sense Jesus inviting you to trust Him more deeply?

Prayer Prompt

Ask God to soften your heart so that you can receive His truth with faith rather than resistance.

Action Step

Spend a few minutes today reading John 10:22–30 slowly. Ask God to help you hear the voice of Jesus clearly.

Day 2 – Hearing the Voice of the Shepherd

Scripture

Gospel of John
“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.”

Devotional Thought

One of the most comforting images in Scripture is the picture of Jesus as the Good Shepherd. In the ancient world, sheep depended entirely on their shepherd for protection, guidance, and provision. Sheep were known for recognizing the voice of their shepherd. Even when several flocks gathered together, each group of sheep responded only to the voice of the one who cared for them.

Jesus uses that image to describe His relationship with His followers.

“My sheep hear my voice.”

Notice that Jesus does not say His sheep are perfect. He does not say they never struggle or never wander. Instead, He says they hear His voice and follow Him.

Following Jesus is not about flawless performance—it is about relationship. The Shepherd knows His sheep personally. He calls them, leads them, and protects them. This is why believers can live with confidence even in uncertain times. Our security does not come from our strength or consistency. It comes from the Shepherd who holds us.

Jesus continues in the passage by saying that no one can snatch His sheep out of His hand. That promise reminds us that salvation is not fragile. When we belong to Christ, we are held by His power and the Father’s power.

Yet this relationship also involves listening. The voice of the Shepherd comes through Scripture, through the guidance of the Holy Spirit, and through the teaching of God’s Word. When we spend time with Him, we learn to recognize that voice more clearly.

The more we listen, the more we trust. And the more we trust, the more we follow.

Reflection Questions

  • How do you most often hear the voice of the Shepherd in your life?

  • What practices help you stay attentive to God’s guidance?

Prayer Prompt

Thank Jesus for being a faithful Shepherd who knows and cares for you personally.

Action Step

Set aside ten minutes today to read Scripture quietly and ask God to help you hear His voice through His Word.

Day 3 – When Resistance Reveals the Heart

Scripture

Gospel of John
“This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil.”

Devotional Thought

Jesus often used the imagery of light and darkness to describe the human condition. Light reveals what is true, while darkness hides what we would rather keep concealed. When light shines, it exposes reality.

In John 10, Jesus’ words and works reveal the truth about who He is. But instead of welcoming that light, many people resist it. Their resistance becomes so intense that some even pick up stones to kill Him.

Why would someone react so strongly to truth?

Because truth confronts us. It challenges our assumptions, exposes our pride, and invites us to change direction. The light of Christ does not simply illuminate our circumstances—it reveals our hearts.

Sometimes we prefer the comfort of darkness because it allows us to stay in control. But living in darkness ultimately leads to confusion, fear, and spiritual distance from God.

Jesus did not come to condemn us with light. He came to rescue us with it.

When light exposes something in our lives—an attitude, a habit, or a belief—it is an invitation to transformation. God reveals what is broken so that He can restore it. The light of Christ is not meant to shame us but to guide us toward healing and freedom.

Instead of resisting the light, we can welcome it with humility. When we do, we discover that God’s truth leads us into a life that is fuller, freer, and more aligned with His purposes.

Reflection Questions

  • What areas of your life might God be shining light on right now?

  • How can you respond with humility instead of resistance?

Prayer Prompt

Ask God to reveal anything in your life that needs to change and give you the courage to walk in His truth.

Action Step

Spend a few moments in quiet reflection today, asking the Holy Spirit to search your heart and reveal anything that needs to be surrendered to God.

Day 4 – Following the Shepherd in Daily Life

Scripture

Gospel of John
“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life.”

Devotional Thought

Following Jesus is not just a moment of decision; it is a daily journey of trust. When Jesus says His sheep follow Him, He is describing an ongoing relationship. Each day brings new opportunities to listen for His voice and respond in obedience.

Sometimes following the Shepherd is straightforward. Other times it requires courage. The path of obedience may lead us into unfamiliar territory, challenging conversations, or difficult decisions. But the promise of Jesus remains the same: He knows His sheep, and He walks with them.

This means we never travel alone.

Jesus does not simply give directions from a distance. He leads. His presence goes before us, guiding our steps and shaping our lives. Even when we cannot see the entire path ahead, we can trust the One who does.

The more we follow Christ, the more our priorities begin to align with His. Our attitudes change, our relationships grow healthier, and our sense of purpose becomes clearer. Following the Shepherd gradually transforms the way we live.

Faith grows through practice. Each act of obedience strengthens our trust in God’s character and goodness.

The invitation today is simple: listen, trust, and follow.

Reflection Questions

  • What is one area of life where Jesus may be inviting you to follow Him more closely?

  • What step of obedience might God be asking you to take today?

Prayer Prompt

Ask Jesus to guide your decisions today and help you follow Him faithfully.

Action Step

Identify one practical way you can obey God today—whether through kindness, forgiveness, generosity, or encouragement.

Day 5 – Sharing the Shepherd with Others

Scripture

Gospel of John
“And many believed in him there.”

Devotional Thought

The passage in John 10 ends with a hopeful reminder: even when some people resisted Jesus, others believed. The message of Christ always produces different responses, but the story never ends with rejection alone.

Across the Jordan, people remembered the witness of John the Baptist and began to believe in Jesus. Their faith grew because someone had faithfully pointed them toward the truth.

This reminds us that our witness matters.

Every conversation, act of kindness, and expression of faith can become a seed that God uses to reach someone else. We may not always see immediate results, but God is constantly at work in the hearts of people around us.

Sharing our faith does not require perfect words or persuasive arguments. Often it simply involves telling others what Jesus has done in our lives and living in a way that reflects His love.

When we live with compassion, humility, and integrity, our lives become a testimony to the goodness of God.

Even when some resist the message of Christ, others are searching for hope. Our willingness to share the light can help someone else find the Shepherd.

Reflection Questions

  • Who in your life might be searching for hope or spiritual direction?

  • How could your words or actions point someone toward Jesus this week?

Prayer Prompt

Ask God to give you opportunities and courage to share the love of Christ with someone.

Action Step

Reach out to one person today with encouragement, kindness, or a conversation about faith.

Day 6 – Choosing Faith Over Resistance

Scripture

Hebrews
“Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts.”

Devotional Thought

The Bible repeatedly reminds us that every encounter with God’s truth invites a response. We can welcome it with faith, or we can resist it with a hardened heart.

Throughout history, people have reacted differently to Jesus. Some walked away, unwilling to change. Others believed and discovered the life that only Christ can give.

The invitation of Jesus remains open today.

Faith does not mean having every question answered or every doubt resolved. It means trusting the character of God and choosing to follow Him even when the path ahead is uncertain.

When we respond to Jesus with faith, we experience the peace and security that come from belonging to the Shepherd. His promise is that those who follow Him will never be lost.

Every day provides new opportunities to say yes to God. Every moment of obedience strengthens our relationship with Him.

The call of this devotional journey is simple: do not resist the voice of the Shepherd. Listen, trust, and follow.

Reflection Questions

  • How is God inviting you to respond to Him today?

  • What would it look like to choose faith instead of resistance in your current circumstances?

Prayer Prompt

Ask God for a heart that responds quickly and faithfully to His voice.

Action Step

Write down one commitment you want to make in response to what God has been teaching you this week.
