Your Daily Devotion for a New Direction

How to Pray

Matthew 6:5–8

Big Idea: Shut the door. Talk to Father.

Day 1 — Check Your Audience

Scripture:
Matthew 6:5 (NLT)
“When you pray, don’t be like the hypocrites who love to pray publicly on street corners and in the synagogues where everyone can see them.”

Devotional Thought:
Jesus was not condemning public prayer. He was confronting prayer that had become performance.

The problem was the audience.

These people were praying to God, but they were more concerned about who was watching them than the One they were talking to. Their words were directed toward heaven, but their hearts were looking around the room.

Prayer was never designed to impress people.

You do not have to sound spiritual. You do not need impressive vocabulary. You do not need to pray like somebody you heard at church.

When you pray, your audience is God.

The freedom in private prayer is that there is nobody there to impress. You can be honest. You can stumble over your words. You can cry. You can sit quietly. You can simply tell your Father what is really happening inside you.

Reflection:
When I pray, am I more concerned about sounding right or being real with God?

Prayer:
Father, help me stop performing and start being honest with You. Teach me to care more about Your presence than the approval of people. Amen.

Today’s Challenge:
Spend 10 minutes alone with God today. Do not worry about saying the “right” thing. Just be honest.

Day 2 — Find Your Secret Place

Scripture:
Matthew 6:6 (NLT)
“But when you pray, go away by yourself, shut the door behind you, and pray to your Father in private.”

Devotional Thought:
Jesus tells us to go away by ourselves and shut the door.

The secret place is not necessarily a particular room. It is a place where distractions are removed and your attention can turn toward God.

For some people it may be a bedroom. For others it may be the car before work, a quiet chair in the house, a backyard, or even a walk around the neighborhood.

The location is less important than the intention.

Jesus is inviting you to create space where nobody is watching and nothing is competing for your attention.

We live surrounded by noise—phones, notifications, television, social media, responsibilities, conversations and constant demands.

Sometimes you have to deliberately shut the door.

Not just the physical door.

Shut the door on distractions.

Shut the door on everybody else's opinions.

Shut the door on the pressure to perform.

And spend some time with your Father.

Reflection:
What distraction most often keeps me from spending uninterrupted time with God?

Prayer:
Father, help me create space for You in my daily life. Teach me to quiet the distractions around me so I can become more aware of Your presence. Amen.

Today’s Challenge:
Choose your regular prayer place. Put your phone away and spend 10 uninterrupted minutes with God.

Day 3 — You Don’t Have to Perform

Scripture:
Matthew 6:6 (NLT)
“Pray to your Father in private. Then your Father, who sees everything, will reward you.”

Devotional Thought:
Private prayer removes the pressure to perform.

There is something freeing about knowing nobody else is listening.

You don't have to impress anyone.

You don't have to find impressive words.

You don't even have to pretend that everything is okay.

Your Father sees you.

He sees the fear you haven't told anybody about.

He sees the disappointment you are carrying.

He sees your hopes.

He sees your frustration.

He sees the thing that keeps you awake at night.

And because He already sees it, you can bring your real self into His presence.

Prayer is not presenting God with a polished version of yourself.

Prayer is bringing your whole heart before the Father who already knows you.

Reflection:
What have I been afraid or reluctant to say honestly to God?

Prayer:
Father, thank You that I do not have to hide from You. Give me the courage to bring You my real thoughts, real fears and real struggles. Amen.

Today’s Challenge:
Tell God one thing today that you have had difficulty saying out loud.

Day 4 — More Words Don’t Mean More Power

Scripture:
Matthew 6:7 (NLT)
“When you pray, don’t babble on and on as the Gentiles do. They think their prayers are answered merely by repeating their words again and again.”

Devotional Thought:
Jesus teaches that prayer is not powerful because it is long.

There is nothing wrong with praying for a long time. Jesus Himself sometimes spent extended periods in prayer.

The problem comes when we believe the number of our words is what convinces God to respond.

God is not manipulated by repetition.

He is not impressed by vocabulary.

He is not persuaded because we found the perfect phrase.

Sometimes one sincere sentence can carry the weight of an entire prayer meeting.

“Lord, help me.”

“Father, give me strength.”

“God, I need You.”

“Jesus, have mercy.”

Prayer is not about saying enough words to make God listen.

You are His child.

He was listening when you began.

Reflection:
Have I ever felt that my prayers were not good enough because I did not know what to say?

Prayer:
Father, thank You that I do not have to impress You with my words. Teach me to pray simply, sincerely and honestly. Amen.

Today’s Challenge:
Throughout the day, pray several short, sincere prayers whenever something comes to your mind.

Day 5 — Your Father Already Knows

Scripture:
Matthew 6:8 (NLT)
“Your Father knows exactly what you need even before you ask him!”

Devotional Thought:
You have never surprised God with your prayer.

You have never given Him information He did not already possess.

Before you explain the situation, He knows.

Before you tell Him what the doctor said, He knows.

Before you describe the financial pressure, He knows.

Before you tell Him what happened in your family, He knows.

Before you admit how worried you are, He knows.

So why pray?

Because prayer is not information for God.

Prayer is communion with God.

Prayer is not about bringing God up to speed. It is about bringing yourself into His presence.

You pray because relationship requires communication.

You pray because your heart needs the presence of your Father.

You pray because there are burdens you were never designed to carry alone.

The beautiful truth is this: before you ever say, “Father, I need…” your Father already knows.

Reflection:
How does knowing that God already knows my needs change the way I approach prayer?

Prayer:
Father, thank You for knowing what I need before I ask. Help me trust Your knowledge, Your wisdom and Your care for my life. Amen.

Today’s Challenge:
Spend part of your 10 minutes today saying nothing. Sit quietly and remind yourself: “My Father knows.”

Day 6 — Before You Tell Everybody, Tell Father

Scripture:
Matthew 6:6 (NLT)
“Go away by yourself, shut the door behind you, and pray to your Father in private.”

Devotional Thought:
When something happens, our first instinct is often to tell somebody.

We call.

We text.

We post.

We explain the situation over and over again.

There is nothing wrong with having trusted people in your life. God created us for community, and sometimes we need wise counsel, encouragement and support.

But Jesus teaches us to develop another instinct:

Before you broadcast it, bring it to the Father.

Before you call everybody else, call on God.

Before you post about it, pray about it.

Before you replay the situation in your mind for the hundredth time, take it into the secret place.

There are conversations you need to have with God before you have them with anybody else.

This week you have been practicing something simple but powerful:

Find your place.

Shut the door.

Talk to your Father.

Sit with God.

Keep some things between you and Him.

And as this week ends, don't let the practice end.

Let private prayer become part of the rhythm of your life.

Reflection:
What would change in my life if prayer became my first response instead of my last resort?

Prayer:
Father, teach me to come to You first. When I am worried, disappointed, confused or overwhelmed, remind me that Your door is always open. Help me build a life of private communion with You. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Today’s Challenge:
Complete your sixth 10-minute prayer time. Then decide when and where you will continue meeting with God next week.

This Week’s Reminder

Find your place.
Choose somewhere you can be alone and undistracted.

Shut the door.
Put down the phone, turn off the television and remove distractions.

Talk to your Father.
Don't perform. Tell God what is really on your heart.

Sit with God.
Spend part of your time quietly listening and reflecting.

Keep it secret.
You don't have to post it, announce it or prove it.

Shut the door. Talk to Father.
